The Highway 22 itinerary takes you on a captivating journey through North Dakota's diverse attractions. Starting in Regent, you'll encounter the Enchanted Highway, a 32-mile stretch adorned with fascinating scrap metal sculptures like the "World's Largest Tin Family" and "Teddy Rides Again." As you continue to Dickinson, you'll discover a wealth of activities, including the Dickinson Museum Center with its Badlands Dinosaur Museum, Ukrainian Cultural Institute, and more. Patterson Lake Recreation Area offers outdoor enthusiasts a range of activities.

In Dunn Center, explore the Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge's rich history and the Dunn Center Museum's local memorabilia. Killdeer presents the Killdeer Mountain/Four Bears Scenic Byway and the Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site, both steeped in history and culture. Little Missouri State Park offers stunning Badlands views and equestrian camping, while the Lost Bridge and its plaque commemorate a unique piece of local history. Finally, in Mandaree, the McKenzie Bay Recreation Area awaits, nestled along the picturesque Little Missouri Bay.

Enchanted Highway
Enchanted Highway

The Enchanted Highway is 32 miles of scrap metal sculptures that include, "World's Largest Tin Family," "Teddy Rides Again," "Pheasants on the Prairie," "Grasshoppers in the Field," "Deer Crossing" and "Fisherman's Dream." The folk-art trail runs parallel to Highway 22 between the towns of Regent and Gladstone.

The museum’s exhibit holds the largest number of dinosaur fossils on display in North Dakota, and a world class mineral exhibit.

Lake Patterson Recreation Area

Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site
Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site

The Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site overlooks the site of a battle fought on July 28, 1864, between troops commanded by General Sully and a gathering of Sioux Indians. Many of the Native Americans that were gathered near the Killdeer Mountains were not involved in, nor connected to the 1862 war. The Killdeer Mountain Battlefield is 8.5 miles northwest of Killdeer.

Located in western North Dakota, Little Missouri State Park is a quiet oasis. This park is home to over 45 miles of trails that run through the picturesque North Dakota Badlands. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the waterways rolling through the rugged landscape. Known for equestrian camping, there is a mix of both modern and primitive campsites. The state park is equipped with horse amenities including corrals and a round pen.

Lost Bridge/Little Missouri Hwy 22 Bridge

As you reach the low point the Badlands, you cross the Little Missouri River at the Lost Bridge site, so named for the fact that when the bridge was built in 1930, there were no road to it. The highway wasn’t completed for 20 years after the bridge was built. A plaque and a piece of the old bridge have been installed on Highway 22 near the new ridge as a memorial.

McKenzie Bay Marina & Recreation Area

The McKenzie Bay Marina and Recreation Area is a 24 mile drive from Highway 22. The Marina is open from May through September providing full facilities for the public such as concessions and food, fuel, bait, camping and RV sites, cabins to rent, boat ramps, fish cleaning station and more. The public recreation area is located next to the marina.
