Trampled by Turtles, hailing from Duluth, Minnesota, was formed in 2003 by frontman Dave Simonett after car thieves stole most of his music gear, leaving him with only an acoustic guitar. Drawing from bluegrass, folk, and rock influences, he assembled a band of musicians new to the genre, including speed-metal drummer-turned-fiddler Ryan Young and bassist Tim Saxhaug. With mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, they developed a high-energy acoustic sound that blends bluegrass with the intensity of rock & roll.
Since their debut album Songs from a Ghost Town (2004), Trampled by Turtles has gained widespread recognition, with Duluth (2008) breaking into the bluegrass charts and Palomino (2010) topping them for over a year. Their crossover success continued with Stars and Satellites (2012), landing on the Billboard 200, and performances at major festivals like Coachella, ACL Fest, and Lollapalooza. Their 2022 album Alpenglow, produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, adds to a rich discography that has solidified them as a staple in modern bluegrass and folk music.
