Thirty-five-mile scenic drive includes battlefields of the first encounter between the US Army and Lakota Sioux in what is now North Dakota. These Civil War-era battles (1863) are the first battles that Sitting Bull and Gall fought against the United States Army. The Sibley Expedition numbered more than 3,000 troops. Estimates are 1,500 warriors plus families were forced to flee across the Missouri River. The tour also includes wildlife viewing areas. The visitor center located in Dawson ND provides map/guide information to battlefields.
