We just concluded our North Dakota vacation and want to share the highlights. Our goal was to visit as many forts as possible with a focus on relaxation, education and family fortification. The great thing is we only needed to travel about 100 miles a day to discover something fun and interesting. After Day One visiting Fort Abercrombie, Fort Ransom and the buffalo in Jamestown, day two was on to Mandan, ND (110 miles approx) where we spent a good part of the day between Fort McKeon Block Houses overlooking the Missouri River, On a slant Indian village and Fort Abraham...

Sunday was Day One of our North Dakota Adventure. Our family goal is to learn as much about frontier history as we can by visiting as many historical sites as possible in our five days, staying within a comfortable schedule. Coming from Minnesota we started with Fort Abercrombie, near Abercrombie, ND. We discovered a fun little muesum and the new interpretive center and fort grounds. The block house gave a great view of the river and my daughters enjoyed how the staff mows the grass to indicate where fort buildings used to be. Next stop was the Bagg Bonannza Farm...

Memorial Weekend at Devils Lake (5/26/2009)

Thursday morning my husband, myself and our kids (two dogs) headed north from Bismarck to Graham's Island State Park at Devils Lake. Having heard that the water was way up, we couldn't wait to see for ourselves. Seems that everyone else couldn't wait either, as the campground filled up day by day. (We had reserved our favorite site back in March.) By Saturday evening, very few campsites were vacant. Everything is really green and beautiful up there, the staff have the Park in great shape.
