Thanks for your interest in North Dakota. People everywhere are starting to notice what this great state has to offer, like a rich history, a vibrant present and a bright future. We're glad that you have chosen our state for your school project. Here are some quick facts about North Dakota.
- North Dakota is bordered by three states - South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana; and two Canadian provinces - Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
- Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1804-1805 at Fort Mandan near Washburn. That is where they met Sakakawea, who helped guide them to the Pacific Ocean.
- Theodore Roosevelt National Park is named for the 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, who had two ranches in the North Dakota Badlands.
- Sitting Bull, a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux chief, spent much of his life in North Dakota and, until his remains were moved in 1953, was buried near Fort Yates.
- General George Custer and the 7th Cavalry were sent to the Plains and stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln, just south of Mandan, in 1873.
- International Peace Garden is located on the U.S. and Canadian borders of North Dakota and Manitoba as a symbol of friendship.
- Explore North Dakota's history at the two state museums, the Heritage Center in Bismarck and the Pembina State Museum in Pembina.
- North Dakota is home to more wildlife refuges than any other state, and is a natural outdoor playground for hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, sailing, skiing, golfing, wildlife viewing and horseback riding.
