Oil and Gas
Energy is the state's third-largest industry. Since the late 1970s and the infamous Arab oil embargo, North Dakota has been in the forefront of the national effort to provide more oil and gas from domestic sources.
Gas was first discovered in 1907. Today more of the state's natural gas is a by-product of oil production. Approximately 800 cubic feet of natural gas will be found with every barrel of oil. There are 13 gas plants in North Dakota.
North Dakota ranks ninth in the nation in annual production and eighth in proven reserves of crude oil.
